The Theory of Knowledge (TOK) Exhibition is one of the most essential and foundational activities that are executed in the first year of the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme in La Floresta. This task is a challenging and immersive assignment that allows students to gain a deeper understanding of the TOK concepts, making it especially significant as it encourages each student to explore how these concepts manifest in the real world through a personally meaningful object. The exhibition is an assignment that takes a more intimate approach, requiring IB students to connect knowledge through selected items. This year, on April 9th, 37 eleventh-grade IB students presented their exhibitions, applying their knowledge, creativity, and analytical skills to create unique and imaginative projects.
In this particular article, the discussion will center on the purpose of the TOK exhibition, share key tips for success and provide guidance on how to structure it effectively.
What exactly is the TOK exhibition?
The TOK exhibition is an internal assessment where students choose 3 objects and explain how they relate to one of the 35 prompts provided by the IB, with the purpose of explaining how knowledge is interpreted and applied through its context.
The Key features of the TOK Exhibition are crucial. To begin this assessment, the eleventh graders chose one of thirty-one prompts offered by the TOK IB Guide. These prompts revolve around central themes of knowledge and its nature, such as the reliability of knowledge, its value, the influence of perspective, and the relationship between knowledge and culture.
After selecting a prompt, students must relate it to three different real-world objects by writing a commentary of up to 950 words. In this written analysis, they explore how the chosen question connects to each object, addressing themes such as culture, perspective, religion, language, ethics, and more. The TOK exhibition is a personal and reflective task, allowing students to develop their own ideas and interpretations.

When beginning the TOK exhibition, students are required to select three main objects that clearly connect to their chosen prompt. It’s important to pick a prompt that genuinely interests them, as this engagement will enhance the quality of their work. Additionally, reviewing the IB assessment criteria early on is crucial, as it provides clear guidance to successfully complete the project.
The commentary should be clear, concise, analytical and well-structured. By following each step:
Step 1: Identifying a clear real-world context
The first thing to do is explain the context of the object. The exhibition clearly identifies three objects and their specific real-world context. Understanding this step helps the reader see why the object is important and how it fits into a bigger story.
Step 2: Interlinking Ideas
Next, the interlinking ideas clearly explain the links between the objects and the IA prompt, making references to the selected IA prompt. References to the chosen IA prompt should be strategically integrated, reinforcing how the objects interact with the central knowledge question and supporting the overall exhibition's purpose.
Step 3: Justifying Ideas
In this step, there should be a strong justification why the objects have been chosen for the exhibition. The reasoning behind the choices should be compelling and well-explained, demonstrating a clear connection to the IA prompt.
Step 4: Using Evidence
Throughout the commentary, support your ideas with evidence. This could be details from the object itself, historical facts, or quotes. Using evidence makes your explanation stronger and shows you have thought carefully about the object.

As the exhibition came to a close, 11th graders from La Floresta School eagerly shared their reflections, revealing the challenges, discoveries, and creative growth that shaped their unique projects. Their insights offer a compelling glimpse into the dedication and imagination behind the exhibitions:
“The TOK Exhibition has been my favorite assignment so far this year, as it has been an activity where I could connect with myself and learn more about myself. It has also helped me gain more skills, for example time management and distribution. Also, I have improved in my public speaking and writing skills.”- Sofia Cardona.
“My experience in the TOK Exhibition was interesting and taught me several valuable lessons. I used objects such as a kimono, a sombrero charro, and the Torah to explore: “how certain knowledge only makes sense within specific communities”. I enjoyed sharing this perspective, connecting it to personal experiences, and presenting such a complex question in a clearer way to those who attended my exhibition.”- Nathalia Aguilar.
“For me, the exhibition was an incredible experience because I found a way to connect objects that have personal significance to me with a question that allows the exploration of various topics of interest. This helped me expand my critical thinking and overcome my fear of public speaking, as I was able to talk about something that truly interested me during my exhibition presentation.”- Luz Romero
“The TOK exhibition helped me see the knowledge I acquire from another perspective, and how each new thing shapes me as a person. Before this experience, I was not aware of the impact that each new knowledge or experience has, so I have become more aware of the impact that new knowledge has on me.”- Valeria Lopez
