For the second year in a row, our school’s U14 basketball team has reached the Jr. NBA finals after 4 long months of intense training, hard work, and well-deserved victories. Building on last year’s performance, the team once again demonstrated resilience and skill, proving that they are not just contenders but champions at heart.

Since May 6, the team has competed against schools from all over the country, representing La Floresta with pride and determination. After playing 21 games, the 10 dedicated girls from 7th to 9th grade—Valentina Prieto, Arianna Serrano, Mariana Vela, Alejandra Vaquerano, Isabella Velasquez, Olga Cea, Adriana Claros, Sofia Marenco, María Fernanda Guzmán, and Ana Valeria García— have once again earned their spot in the prestigious final that was played against their toughest rival in the tournament: Itexal.

Throughout the tournament, the team’s success was fueled not only by their skill but also by the incredible chemistry they built together, both on and off the court. Their efforts were guided by the unwavering support of their coaches, Miss Erika and Miss Karol, who have been instrumental in shaping the team’s strategy, discipline, and confidence.

As the girls advanced to the semi-finals and finals, the entire school community rallied behind them. Parents waved banners and students, teachers, and friends dressed in the school’s colors, turning the gym into a sea of red and blue. The cheers grew louder with every point, creating an atmosphere that felt more like a home game. Their unwavering support pushed the team to give their best, reminding them that they weren’t just playing for themselves, they were playing for the entire La Floresta family.

Ninth grader María Fernanda Guzmán shared her thoughts on what this journey meant for her and her teammates. “Basketball isn’t just about shining brighter than others or scoring 20 points,” she expressed thoughtfully. “It’s about playing as a team, making smart decisions, and contributing in any way you can. But above all, it’s about enjoying every moment on the court and creating memories with your teammates.” Her words perfectly capture the spirit of friendship and unity that has been the foundation of the team’s accomplishments.

María Fernanda’s favorite memory, surprisingly, was not one of the high-stakes games or a pivotal win, but rather a bus ride back from San Miguel where they had had a big win. This moment highlights that for the team, the journey and the bonds they created were more important than just the competition. It wasn’t the scoreboards or the trophies that stood out to her, but the sense of unity and friendship that made the experience meaningful. This perspective shows that the essence of sports goes beyond physical performance; it is also about the shared moments that strengthen a team’s character.

Such memories are the foundation of a strong team culture, and this sense of belonging and joy is likely a key reason why the U14 team has performed so well in consecutive years. It’s moments like these that fuel the motivation to push through grueling practices and tight games, because at the end of the day, they’re not just playing for a championship—they’re playing for each other.

While the final result wasn’t what they had hoped for, their performance on the court demonstrated incredible growth, determination, and sportsmanship. This year’s finals were not just a repeat of last year, but a testament to how the team has continued to evolve. They held their ground until the very last second, proving that they are a force to be reckoned with.

Although the loss was disappointing, it has only fueled the team’s desire to come back stronger next year. With two back-to-back finals appearances under their belt, the U14 girls have set a new standard for excellence, and their journey is far from over. The entire school community is proud of their achievements and looks forward to what they will accomplish in the seasons to come.

With a foundation built on friendship, dedication, and perseverance, there’s no doubt that the team’s best chapters are still ahead. Let’s continue to cheer on the girls, because their story is just beginning!
