“Meet me in the hallway

Meet me in the hallway

I just left your bedroom

Give me some morphine

Is there any more to do?”

The song opens with a petition for a meeting. His words, desperate and resigned, show he knows there is nothing left to do. Additionally, this first verse sets a sorrowful tone that is likely to linger through the entire duration of the song, and shows us that the singer is in mourning of someone or something, emphasizing this by using the petition for morphine as an exaggeration of his pain.

“Just let me know, I'll be at the door, at the door

Hoping you'll come around

Just let me know, I'll be on the floor, on the floor

Maybe we'll work it out”

Entering the chorus, Harry pleads for an answer, telling whoever is listening that he will stick around for them to work out the bump they’ve ran into. It is especially interesting how he mentions he’ll “be on the floor” to bring light to his desperation. As mentioned before, the tone he uses is sorrowful, definitely transmitting his pain and vulnerability towards the listener.

“I gotta get better, gotta get better

I gotta get better, gotta get better

I gotta get better, gotta get better

And maybe we'll work it out”

The second half of the chorus presents an interesting outlook on the intention behind Harry’s words, bringing a new perspective on his feelings while writing the song. The repetition of the phrase “I gotta get better” suggests that he is trying to work on himself and improve as a person. However, these words could also be seen as him saying that, if he gets better, he can get the relationship back.

“I walked the streets all day

Running with the thieves

'Cause you left me in the hallway (Give me some more)

Just take the pain away”

The second verse brings some new light to the situation. The lyrics suggest that his pleads didn’t work, he has lost himself completely in a relationship that is not coming back. Additionally, the phrase “just take the pain away” connects beautifully with the fourth line of the first verse “give me some morphine”, because it elongates the pain he is feeling all throughout the song and reinforces the afore mentioned sorrowful tone of the song.

“We don't talk about it

It's something we don't do

'Cause once you go without it

Nothing else will do.”

Finally, the outro of the song presents the resolution of the conflict, showing Harry has come to terms with the fact that he has lost this person forever. He experiences a sense of loss regarding what he previously had, but has chosen to move on by not addressing or discussing it.  The very last lyric is very powerful because it shows his relationship to this person as some sort of addiction, and he states that no feeling will ever compare to what he used to feel for the person he has now lost. Altogether, Harry Styles lays himself bare throughout the whole song, showing vulnerability and heartache, and walks the listener through his journey towards acceptance while highlighting the lows that come with grief.
